Layer of Abnormally Cold Bottom Water over Southern Aves Ridge.

چکیده
A thermograd record obtained over the Ayes Ridge indicated existence, at the time of observation, of a cold layer of water in the lowest 13 meters, undergoing high-frequency internal oscillations. The great discontinuity in temperature across the sedimnent-water interface and the lack of agreement with the normal temperature structure indicate that the layer was a transient feature. This abnormal condition may be related to the passage of a hurricane 3 days earlier.

The SW Indian Ocean contains at least four layers of water masses with different sources: deep Antarctic (Lower Circumpolar Deep Water) flow to the north, midwater North Indian Deep Water flow to the south and Upper Circumpolar Deep Water to the north, meridional convergence of intermediate waters at 500-1500 m, and the shallow South Equatorial Current flowing west. Sedimentation rates in the a...
متن کاملThe Dynamic Role of Ridges in a #-plane
In this thesis, the dynamic role of bottom topography in a #3-plane channel is systematically studied in both linear homogeneous and stratified layer models in the presence of either wind stress (Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 6) or buoyancy forcing (Chapter 5). In these studies, the structure of the geostrophic contour plays a fundamental role, and the role of bottom topography is looked at from two di...
متن کاملPotential temperature, oxygen and circulation of bottom water in the Southern Ocean*
-The circulation of bottom and near-bottom water can be determined in a qualitative manner by inspecting parameter distributions. Bottom potentia! temperature and oxygen (which show a definite relation in the t~-Oz diagram) are very useful for this purpose in the portion of the Southern Ocean dealt with in this paper (20°W westward to 170°W and south of 50°S). Observations used are deeper than ...
متن کاملAn Antarctic oceanographic section along 17&E*
The circulation pattern of Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters is strongly influenced by the complex marine topography south of New Zealand. The distribution of water characteristics indicates that the Antarctic Circumpolar Current undergoes intense wave-like migrations, which may be transient in nature, apparently associated with the Macquarie Ridge and Campbell Plateau. The bulk of the circump...

In this study, measured hydrophysical data collected by the University of Miami researchers from the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz during the period December 1996 to March 1998 and climate data from the Qeshm island meteorological station were used to simulate water column turbulence south of the Qeshm Island, via General Ocean Turbulence Model (GOTM). The model does not use slip and fl...
